![]() ![]() Some mobile games require those things as well, but they're not my favorite. Playing console and PC games requires activation, time commitment and attention. It's clear that they did this to avoid falling into the old traps of mobile game development, but it's going to hamper their ability to make money in the long run.Ī note about the headline: I tend to play mobile games when I'm not doing anything else. But there's not much motivation to buy them, and the randomized nature of it makes that all important feedback loop between payment and reward a little skewed. The items are nice, and having Star Paladin Cross in my base is certainly making things easier. There's monetization, of course: you can buy lunchboxes full of special items that make the game easier. Fallout Shelter, like its big brother, has real style, and that's its most important strength. None of it is onerous - you could just as easily sit there and collect the power plant every three minutes or so, watching your dwellers go about their little animations. There are just enough things to do: you can collect resources, get your vault dwellers to make babies, shuffle some jobs around, defend against raider attacks, send dwellers out into the wasteland to get new gear, etc. Mobile games like this are all about how pleasing they are to have open in front of you: they need to create a sense of life without asking too much from the player. And I just can't seem to stop playing Fallout Shelter. It's a bit like a apocalyptic Tiny Tower. Right in the middle of the Fallout announcement, however, Todd Howard dropped something new that nobody saw coming: Fallout Shelter, a free-to-play game about managing a wasteland vault. ![]() ![]() ![]() Everything else was good to see, but expected: Dishonored 2, Fallout 4 (even with the 2015) release date, Doom and Elder Scrolls Online: all cool, but no true surprises. Bethesda's first ever E3 press conference came with one honest surprise. ![]()
